Remember when Acura was awesome? The owner of this 2002-03 TL Type-S that I saw this morning clearly does. A little dirty, but properly mint. It seems a little tame these days, but 260 hp and 0-60 in 6.2 (per C&D) was impressive performance back in 2002. And the understated styling still looks great today.

I loved the look of that generation of Saber/Inspire/TL. Though I prefer the pre-refresh look with the amber turns.

C&D did a comparison test between a CL Type S coupe and 330Ci. They got the CL to hit 60mph in 5.9 seconds. Definitely no slouch.

I had a roommate in college back in 2005 that had a base 3.2CL and that thing felt pretty quick compared to most other vehicles I had been in at the time, so I’ll be the Type S was awesome in it’s day. Neither the TL or CL were shouty about performance (and to be fair there was only so much they could do with FWD), but that’s what I loved about Acura around 2000.

I miss mine so so much....i don’t miss the slipping transmission though

Facelift cons: it really looked better before the facelift. Facelift pros: they added the Type S.

I knew a guy in college who had one that was slightly lowered on gorgeous 5 spoke wheels, clean front lip, and HID main and fog light conversion. That thing was GORGEOUS. Classy in a way none of the over styled crap is today. As you said, it wasn’t the fastest but for what it was it was damn impressive.

the RL has come up on my radar a few times now. I think that would be a fun commuter

RL would be. They are exceedingly rare... do they share many parts with more common Honda’s? I’d be terrified of the prospect of fixing it (on the other hand an RL should probably run forever with minimal maintenance.)

“remember when Acura was awesome?”
Wasn’t aware they stopped.

My high school friend had a 2000 3.2TL as his first car. It was a good car, apart from the fact that it ate through 3 torque converters. We made him drive everywhere as his parents paid for gas, and he was the one of us that had a sedan.

I had one through my entire high school life. It was on its original transmission when my dad sold it while I was in college and that second owner ragamuffin blew the transmission almost immediately on a trip to Vegas.
I miss it all the time.

wiki says it’s a rebadged and leathered up Honda Legend so parts should be out there! It’s a major jump, but I really liked the TSX I had for a short bit. I think the big daddy would be quite enjoyable. They are rare, but available

I think they’re getting some swagger back. But about 5 years ago the lineup was full of stuff like an outdated TL, rebadged Civic, the ZDX, weird styling, no 2-doors and nothing sporty unless you stretch to count whatever they called version of he ILX that had the Si drivetrain.

Fun fact, RLs don’t break. They, and the Lexus LS, will out live us all.

My local CL had about a dozen non-running LS’s last time I checked. I think there is a wide swath of the population that thinks Lexus LS = Runs forever with absolutely zero maintenance.

Well, there’s a difference between “Runs forever” and “What’s an Oil Change?” As durable cars get cheaper, they become more attractive to lazy car owners.

Really a great car. Comfy and powerful enough to be interesting. It really hated the Honda paper-mache torque converters.
